Mystical Fairies

My sculptures are created from polymer clay, a term used to describe synthetic clays manufactured by several companies under their individual trade names. Each manufacturer's formula varies in durability, texture and color, but all are similar in one aspect: they are clays formulated to cure at temperatures far lower than typical kiln-baked clays. Because of their relatively low-firing temperatures, these clays have seen a broadening application in the arts. Their plastic-based composition yields a final product that is much less susceptible to breakage than ordinary clays. Yet it takes a seasoned artist to construct long-lasting sculptures when intricate design and several media are combined. All of art is not in the image alone. Each sculpture is designed with an artistic concept, but is also engineered to select the most appropriate combination of media to create the final form. My large sculptures deceive the eye with an infrastructure of wood, brass wire or aluminum which forms a solid armature for otherwise impossibly fragile creations. Through careful selection of clays, I achieve just the right combination of effects in color, texture and flexibility. No molds or forms are used and numerous hours go into their creation. Strands of tinted natural fibers, feathers, sea shells and jewels add texture to my work. Pigmented ink and china paint here and there to lend highlight to the natural colors of each piece and the work is done. As a finishing touch, I also compose a short tale, describing each sculpture created.

Once upon a time there grew a magical place called Enchantment. It's a very special place where fairies fly freely and time stands still. Imagine a place described in the tales of our youth, where miracles and mischief existed side by side. Mystical Fairies are delicate creatures born of the sense and human spirit; they come into being at perfect moments, like when the fragrance of an undefined blossom reaches you the very same instant the warm summer sun kisses your cheek. They come from quiet tears of overwhelming joy. They come from wisdom and the discoveries of truth and true love. They call to us at any age -- to dance, play and be happy. Like angels, fairies were rumored to appear only to those who truly believed in them, and thus, especially to children.

The Free Falling Fairy suspends from her feet. Their nude bodies create a striking contrast to their peacock feathered wings. Her arms cross and her hands rest on her shoulders as though she were diving through the air.

The Expectant Mommy Fairy

The Expectant Mommy Fairy is so darling as she rests one hand on her rather large tummy while the other holds her cheek, giving her an expression of “Oh, my!” This Fairy makes a wonderful shower gift (that eventually adorns the child’s room), invoking lots of joy, smiles and laughter. She comes in a color that will go nicely in a boy’s room, as well as, a girl’s room; white, turquoise and purple. Other colors can be requested. She is sculpted completely by hand and no molds or forms are used in her creation.

Ariel the Fairy

Ariel is a 10-inch sitting Fairy complete with tiny toes. In her hands she holds a midnight blue butterfly that matches her dress made of blue ribbon with sparkling flecks of gold. Tiny clay flowers adore her hair and dress. She is sculpted completely by hand using dental tools. No molds or forms are used and numerous hours go into her creation. She has an infrastructure of wood, brass, wire or aluminum which forms her solid armature. She is an Artist Signed Series and comes with a large laminated story card.
